REMEMBERING STEVE ALBINI
From the Pixies’ Surfer Rosa to Nirvana's In Utero to PJ Harvey’s Rid of Me, Steve Albini walked a
different path through life and music. He has inspired what I try to do in the studio and behind the mixing board from the very beginning.
I love his ideas about the music business and his work ethic.
In his opinion, putting producers in charge of
recording sessions often destroys records, while the role of the recording engineer is to solve problems in capturing the sound
of the musicians, not to threaten the artists' control over their product.
Albini once said "The term 'rock & roll music' originally meant dirty
songs about fucking. It was rhythmic songs that were euphemistically or explicitly about fucking. Songs about fucking -- that's what
rock & roll meant."
My favorite Steve Albini quote is "I want to be in cahoots with bands who want to make the record of their dreams."
Indeed.
